Your Eye Exam
At Cold Harbor Vision, we concentrate on family vision care and contact lens fitting. A routine exam always includes a thorough vision assessment and prescription for any needed glasses. Contact lens fitting is another option and some patients also choose referral for refractive surgery such as LASIK. Another important component of the exam is an ocular health assessment. Many general health problems manifest in the eyes or vision, and vice versa. Diabetes and hypertension as well as other systemic disorders can have damaging effects on the eyes. Every exam includes screening for specific eye diseases such as glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy. Most of our surgical referrals are to Commonwealth Eye Care Associates (a trusted referral-only practice) though you may prefer your own doctor or one recommended by a friend or family.

Our Services
Cataracts
Part of your check up includes the assessment of ocular health, and a common problem that accompanies aging is cataracts. There may be a gradual weakening of vision, but at every step of the way your eye exam will ensure that your best vision is maintained with glasses or referral for surgery when necessary. Cataract surgery is one of the most common and successful types of surgery, and we would refer you to a top eye surgeon in the area.
Comprehensive Eye Exams
Regular vision and eye exams should be a familiar part of your general health care. We recommend everyone have a checkup at least every two years. Children usually receive their first vision screening by the pediatrician but need a full eye exam before entering school to be sure they perform at their best, with annual checks thereafter. For adults, an annual exam may be recommended for specific eye conditions, and especially for those with diabetes and other heath issues.
Contact Lens Exams
Many people prefer the freedom and look of contact lenses as opposed to glasses. We offer contact lens evaluations for nearly all prescriptions including for astigmatism and presbyopia (near vision). Your satisfaction is our main goal, but be assured that providing safe contact lens wear and maintaing eye health are always part of the prescription you receive.
Diabetes
One of the most prevalent health problems today is diabetes. Your family doctor will recommend an annual eye exam if you have diabetes. We pay particular attention to the internal exam of the eye where the damaging effects of diabetes affect the small blood vessels. When needed, a retina specialist is the doctor consulted for more detailed assessment and treatment.
Glaucoma
This is an eye disease affecting about 2% of the population. Since there are no early vision changes and onset is gradual, detection is an important part of the routine eye exam. The doctor will consider various health factors as well as your eye pressure and a careful assessment of the optic nerve visible at the back of the eye. When medical attention is required, we consult specialists in the treatment of glaucoma that we trust.
Macular Degeneration
This is one of the most common causes of failing vision in advancing years. Recent improvements in treatment help many people preserve their vision, but this can require careful monitoring and referral to retina specialist.
Fees & Insurance
Our most common services are routine exam ($115) and basic contact lens exam ($170).
Please have your insurance information handy when you call. Vision exams are typically covered only by a “vision plan”, but not your medical policy. This is sometimes listed on your insurance card along with your dental plan. We do not handle any medical insurances including Medicare, nor any Medicaid vision plans. Your glasses purchase is separate from the exam and depends on the insurances accepted by the Optician, such as our good neighbor Eyemart Express.
