Get To Know Dr. Balgemann
Shortly after graduating from Knox College, Dr. Michael Balgemann started his career in optometry as an optometric technician and optician. Under the mentorship of Dr. Lawrence Vogel, Dr. James Saul, Dr. John Loesch, and Dr. Luz Banados, he decided to become a full-time optometrist. With their support and Dr. Balgemann’s desire to better assist his glasses-wearing family and friends, he returned to school, graduated from the Illinois College of Optometry in 1999, and has been practicing ever since.

Our Services
Comprehensive
Eye Exams
Comprehensive eye exams are step one for maintaining proper eye health. If your family has a history of eye disease, consider getting a comprehensive eye exam once or twice a year. With no family history, having one performed once every 2 years is usually enough of a safety net. Our practice has all the equipment necessary to reliably detect cataracts, glaucoma, and more before they get too severe to treat effectively.
Contact Lens
Exams
If you’re trying contacts for the first time or updating your current prescription, we ensure our contact lens exams are thorough, accurate, and that your new lenses will fit comfortably.
Pediatric Eye Care
Your child’s formative years are the best time to remedy eye development irregularities. We love working with children and accept patients as young as three years old. Schedule a pediatric eye exam if your child is experiencing any of the following vision-related symptoms: •Eye rubbing •Squinting •Headaches •Excessively blinking •Covering one eye when trying to focus
Geriatric Eye Care
We recommend that seniors 65 and older get a comprehensive eye exam once a year. Not only do most eye diseases develop more rapidly during later years, but eye tissue and structure change much quicker, so recurring eye health appointments should be prioritized.
Primary Care
Whether or not you require more frequent exams, sticking to a schedule can help you maintain good eye health and detect common eye diseases and ailments early. Call us to schedule your next eye exam, maintain healthy eyes, and keep your prescription current. We’re happy to accept new patients.
Dry Eye
Treatments
Dry eye causes visual impairment and discomfort and is a common and chronic issue for many adults. We offer dry eye consultations to provide the personalized treatment you need to alleviate your symptoms. Call today to schedule yours.
Eye Emergencies
Call our office immediately if you’ve suffered an eye injury or sudden vision change. We often make time for urgent eye care needs like pink eye, red eye, and more.
Eye Disease Evaluations
Our practice’s top-of-the-line technology can help diagnose and detect many eye diseases. Cataracts Cataracts are the most common eye ailment in older adults. A cataract occurs when your eye’s lens becomes clouded, usually resulting in blurry, foggy, or less colorful vision. Symptoms may only appear once cataracts have developed, so frequent eye exams with your optometrist are the most effective way to identify early warning signs. Glaucoma Glaucoma occurs when pressure inside the eye causes damage to the optic nerve. Symptoms are usually non-existent until glaucoma develops enough to damage your peripheral vision, so having a comprehensive eye exam is vital for early detection and prevention.
Driver’s License
Vision Testing
Prove you’re road-ready with a DMV vision test. Whether you’re acquiring your license for the first time or simply renewing, we offer vision testing and correction to ensure the vision portion of your driving test goes smoothly.
DoDMERB
Vision Testing
DoDMERB stands for Department of Defense Medical Examination Review Board and refers to the medical clearance required for admittance into a military academy. We offer official DoDMERB vision testing so you can quickly complete the visual portion of your physical.
